Chess Team Trial

Study each position then enter the start and end square of your selected move in lowercase letters, for example e4 e5 (it is simplest to [TAB] Key between boxes). I am sorry but no validity checks are made. When finished, click the Result button and your estimated rating will be calculated and displayed in both ELO and BCF, together with your Board in the team.

To get the most accurate estimate you should:

Allow yourself a maximum of 45 minutes for the complete test. This is tournament time but takes into account that it is the middlegame where moves are slower than in the opening.

Concentrate on the position and evaluate it without having a board set up and moving the pieces around!!

You should note that these are not 'find the win' type problems. Not all of the positions are wins for the side with the move, nor is the best move necessarily a brilliant one; indeed, some of the combinations are deliberately flawed! This is to overcome the inaccuracies in tests where you know that there is a winning combination available.

ELO and BCF are common recognised grading systems. The school board shows the team position where 1 = top board, 6 = bottom board and 'Fail' indicates that you would not have made the team.
